My Purchase College Experience | Throwback Thursday Photographs Coming Soon!

Back from hiatus, a very long one, I've decided that although my Purchase College years are long gone,  the memories and photos still remain, dust included. I feel excited and compelled to revisit, release and share my photos here, on a weekly basis, as an ode the Purchase College experience. Throwback Thursday in full effect, Sounds good?  Let's not forget about Purchase Alumni, who are doing some amazing and important work in which I'm still connected, along with other Purchase people who I randomly run into literally everywhere. Sharing their projects and awesomeness here would simply allow me to do what I do, which is write, connect, contribute and support those who inspire growth and the best in us.  Stay close!

I see Purchase People! | Urban Voices Heard : The Art Of Creation Women's History Month Event | March 2011

I see Purchase people! Purchase College SUNY folks are everywhere! Recently, I ran into a fellow alumna at The Art Of Creation event held in honor of Women's History month at El Fogon Center for the Arts located at 989 Home Street in the Bronx. Features for The Art Of Creation included: Lo Anderson-Poet, Paradigm-Poet Peggy Robles-Alvarado-Poet, Amma Whatt-Singer, Passion NoLastNecessary-Poet, and Visual Artist Malanya Graham, Hosted By Jamica.

Intimate, open, and direct, The Art Of Creation  was comprised of  heartfelt spoken word, music, conversation, and a live painting!  The dialogue that each artists' work created was engaging and informative.  Women's issues were discussed and light was shed on common misconceptions associated with titles, gender roles and classifications in the gay/homosexual community, sparked by spoken word piece's such as "I am a Stud." Worth every minute of the four hour sojourn from the comfort of my couch, I am thankful to have bared witness and been a apart of The Art of Creation.

Here are a few snapshots from the event, more will be posted, visit again soon!

New York, NY - Five Alive! School of Art+Design Exhibit at Monya Rowe Gallery presents the work of five Purchase College SUNY, School of Art+Design Master of Fine Arts degree candidates. An opening reception will be held on Thursday, May 20th from 6pm to 8pm and the show will be on view May 20th through June 5th. Embracing methods of drawing, painting, photography, sculpture, installation, performance and video, the works of these five emerging artists reflect the innovative and interdisciplinary spirit of the Purchase College SUNY MFA in Visual Arts program (directed by Kate Gilmore & Omar Lopez-Chahoud). Curated by Omar Lopez-Chahoud, the exhibition showcases work by Neil Dvorak, Scott Daniel Ellison, Merav Ezer, Tom Sarver, and Rachel Wiecking.

Neil Dvorak creates objects that explore the relationship between artifact and functionality. In her videos, performances and installations, Merav Ezer explores the psychological and physical implications of self-created environments. Scott Daniel Ellison's paintings and photographs explore themes of horror and paganism. Tom Sarver combines humor, social commentary and low-tech gadgetry to explore relationships between the art world and the everyday. Rachel Wiecking's work uses techniques of casting, printmaking and sculpture to force collisions between physiological and utilitarian systems.

Purchase College's Michael Bastianelli Could Win $75,000 & Take Home $10,000 in MTV's "Redraw the Line Challenge"

Purchase College's Michael Bastianelli could win a $75,000 development budget for his "Taking Control of Digital Abuse Map" idea and take home $10,000 in MTV's "Redraw the Line Challenge".

Read his idea below, learn more about the challenge and vote here: http://bit.ly/793DlB

"A digital map of the United States that aggregates and displays examples of how young people are taking action to stop the spread of digital abuse. Actions that would be mapped include getting your school to adopt a digital dating abuse or cyber-bullying curriculum, pledging to "opt-out" of digital abuse, helping a friend, joining in the national conversation on digital ethics, deleting instead of forwarding an inappropriate message and more. Actions taken can be submitted online or via mobile devces, and as actions accumulate, the map will pulse with color, showing the type and volume of actions playing out by region. The map will make it easy for users to learn more about the actions their peers are taking around the country, helping to spread good ideas and inspire more young people to join in and stop the spread of digital abuse."

MFA Alumnus '06, Adam Nikelwicz in Group Exhibit, Post-Gogol: The Silent Absence of the Body opens at SLAG Gallery

Post-Gogol: The Silent Absence of the Body opens at SLAG Gallery, 531 West 25th Street, Ground Floor, #10, NYC, on February 18, 2010 and runs through March 16, 2010.

OPENING RECEPTION: THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 18, 2010, 6-8pm

Artists in the show: Adam Niklewicz, Purchase College SUNY, School of Art+Design MFA Alumnus, 2006, Jason Irla, Lina Kim, SOSka Group (Mykola Ridnyi, Ganna Kriventsova, and Serhiy Popov), and Krzysztof Zarebski

Additional participation: Jan Tarasin

Guest Curator: Marek Bartelik

Dates: February 18—March 16, 2010

‘Gogol, not Google’… and we laughed. This exhibition appropriates the name of the great Russian/Ukrainian writer to speak about the haunting appearance of physical objects and images in the present world, in which laughter (sometimes through tears) continues to serve as a potent agent of timeless sublime. Laughter keeps disarming the body and makes it invisible.

The time and the place of action should be considered irrelevant. ‘[I] t is as useless to look in Dead Souls’, as another giant Russian writer observed, ‘for an authentic Russian background as it would be to try and form a conception of Denmark on the basis of that little affair in cloudy Elsinore.’ Who doubts the existence of Dead Souls …

Post-Gogol: The Silent Absence of the Body is a micro-tribute to books, or rather to the book, not as a text, a pure artifact or a found object, but rather as an inspiration (direct or indirect) for the artist. By alluding to such loaded referents as Gogol’s stories, the artist acknowledges the rigorous yet evanescent power of poesis. However, none of the artists in this show illustrates Gogol; what they do, instead, they share ‘a Gogolian gusto of weird details.’

The artists in this exhibition represent different generations (the oldest one was born in 1939, the youngest in 1985) and come from different parts of the world: the U.S Brazil, and the Ukraine. They are the hybrid and cloudy citizens of their countries: the native of Detroit, Jason Irla currently finishes an MFA program in Baltimore, MD (probably the most “Gogolian” of all American cities I know); Lina Kim of Korean and Brazilian family backgrounds, lives in Germany; Adam Niklewicz and Krzysztof Zarebski emigrated to the United States from Poland before the collapse of the Berlin Wall; the SOSka group consists of three Ukrainian artists born in their country before it ceased to belong to the Soviet Union. –Excerpts from Marek Bartelik’s introduction to the show.

This exhibition will present Irla’s digital video and prints The Past Has Made Us Apprehensive Of The Present, 2010; Kim’s photographs from the series “Rooms,” 2003-2006; Niklewicz’s multimedia installation My Dinner with Marian, 2009-2010; SOSka’s video Barter, 2007; and a selection of Zarebski’s recent sculptures and drawings. In addition, the exhibition will include a “pictogram” from 1983-90, by the late Polish artist Jan Tarasin (1926-2009).

SLAG Gallery specializes in contemporary Eastern European art and is operated by owner and director Irina Protopopescu.

SLAG Gallery is located at 531 West 25th Street, Ground Floor, suite 10. (Between 10th and 11th Avenues).

represented by Priska C. Juschka Fine Art in New York

Wednesday, February 17, 2010
Reception: 5 – 7pm
Public Artist Talk: 6:30pm
On View: February 15th – March 26th

Dannielle Tegeder presents five new animations inspired by original drawings on view in this exhibition. With these experiments in drawing, she continues to expand the parameters of drawing and painting as a medium and source.

Curated by Kirsten J. Nelson

PRESS RELEASE: http://bit.ly/ci0oLb
DIRECTIONS: http://bit.ly/aotfS

Curator, Kirsten Nelson is also a Purchase College, SUNY Alumna (MFA) class of 2004 who is currently exhibiting work at Frederieck Taylor Gallery, assembly required, which closes February 20, 2010.

The exhibit, assembly required consists of new sculpture by Kirsten Nelson that is constructed out of common home building materials. These sculptures exist between what they seem to be and what they seem to be lacking; what is still required in order to understand them as realized objects or idealist representations. They exist in a state of suspended reference, as if they were available in the Sears Roebuck & Co. catalogs from the 1900’s as “ready-cut” kit homes with construction methods that allowed for a simplified do-it-yourself method of assembly.

Rob Fuerer: An Upcoming Interview & Best of Show Honors in SUNY Exhibition | Purchase College

Rob Fuerer, Painting & Drawing Senior at the School of Art+Design at Purchase College SUNY opened his campus studio to Picture Purchase for a live interview that will be posted in the upcoming month.

Check out some of his work here in the meanwhile. His painting, "Subway" was published in the January 2009 issue of "Education Outlook: Trends in Higher Education" a Journal News publication (the local newspaper of Westchester County). The photo essay featured his artwork along with the work of two recent School of Art+Design BFA alumni, Yekaterina Voevodkin, Graphic Design and Marshall Sheuttle, Photography, BFA.

Both Rob Fuerer and Marshall Sheuttle's work received best of show honors in the Fall 2008 SUNY Student Art Exhibition and was invited to exhibit their work in SUNY's Best of Show Student Art Exhibition this summer. Consuelo DaSilva, Painting & Drawing BFA'09 Alumna, who participated in the Spring 2009 SUNY Student Art Exhibition also received best of show honors and joined Rob and Marshall in exhibiting work in SUNY's Best of Show Student Art Exhibition held at the State University of New York Plaza in Albany, New York this summer.

Modest and determined, Rob speaks of his experience as a growing artist, a Purchase College student and a human being to which adverse emotion has acquainted itself, though uninvited. He mentioned some experiences off the record to which I'm not allowed to indulge you but you'll be exposed to that which is positive, productive and flourishing in the life of this undergraduate, student artist.

In his own words, "Although I am an American, I was born in Switzerland, and lived for some time in Taiwan, where I learned to speak fluent Mandarin. I then began to teach myself to paint, and using my Chinese language skills was able to successfully open a school for children where I taught crafts. I am particularly taken with the works of David Kapp, Yvonne Jacquette, and Eric Fischl. I am struck by the rhythms and patterns in the life of their canvases. And, I feel that this has opened me to the more metaphorical rhythms of the city and its people. These are played out for me in the vibrating bright lights and obscured shadows of the city, and in the vibrancy of life and darker underbelly of the urban narratives."

Be sure to check out Robert Fuerer's interview with Picture Purchase to be posted in the upcoming month. Share your thoughts about his work, post your own questions and perhaps they will be answered in a follow-up interview.
Rob's Painting titles in order of appearance, from top to bottom: "Traffic", "Subway", "George", "Untitled", "Untitled".

Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt - Neil Fridd Sculpture Alumnus '09 in Seventeen Magazine | Purchase College SUNY

Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt, posing for Seventeen Magazine, with its front man Neil Fridd, one of SUNY Purchase's most recent Alum. Back in June or early July '09, Neil told me that he would be touring Europe with his band while I was pulling out of the Campus Center South parking lot. I guess the red-bearded Fridd who was sporting a pair of hot pink short-shorts and ripped-up/written-on tee is staying true to his word.

Although his major was sculpture his music continues to engage people of all ages. His elaborate costumes and set designs are evident of his degree and background in art. Some might classify his work as performance pieces. Neil graduated from the School of Art+Design's Sculpture Program where Donna Dennis currently serves as the Area Head for the Sculpture Board of Study at Purchase College. She and other Art+Design full-time faculty will be exhibiting work at the college this fall '09 semester. You may remember Donna from this New York Times article.

Your Schoolmate is Famous & You're Not! | Victor Cruz, Purchase College Alumnus in JR Commercial

Victor Cruz is hilarious and was always one to entertain while in college. Its great to see the people that you went to school with on television while you secretly envy their success and ponder the many ways you could kick your own butt for perhaps, letting certain life situations bully your dreams. Even for those who are very content in there non-public, non-famous and non-whatever else existence, there seems to always be that ounce of "damn, I should of, could of, would of done..." but didn't and still not doing.

George Elliot once said, "It's never too late to be what you might have been."

Checkout Victor Cruz in his latest commercial below. Can you think of a situation that you experienced where you were in a position like the guy behind the desk? Honestly, would you remain as calm?

Gamers!!! "I Got Next" Movie Trailer produced by Ian Cofino, Purchase College SUNY, Art+Design Graduating Senior

Purchase College SUNY, School of Art+Design graduating senior, Ian Cofino, has produced a motion graphic movie trailer for a feature-length movie currently in the works.

The arcade and gaming world are major contributers to his 7,500+ hits on “You Tube” , only after a few days of posting.

INTERVIEW SNIPPET:
"Four11: Who or what has really been your biggest drive in seeing the completion of this piece? I know it must take a lot of work, so there must be some support group.

IC: There have been so many people who have supported me so far, I can’t name one person or group of people as my primary support group, but my parents have certainly been a huge help as well as my project advisor, Robin Lynch. My friends at Purchase and in the fighting game community have always been there whenever I need help or had problems. So everyone has really been incredibly supportive of the project right from the get go. (Interview excerpt from thefour11.org)"

A California gallery will be showing a refined and longer version of this piece in a few weeks. He has been asked to be a panelist in an upcoming gaming convention. He has been invited to film at various international gaming conventions.

Check out Reviews of Ian’s work in the press (and wide mention of Purchase College) in addition to a radio interview: Podcast - April 7, 2009 “An Interview With The Creator of I Got Next”

Congratulations Ian and many thanks to the faculty at Purchase for their help especially Ms. Robin Lynch, Ian’s mentor and academic advisor.
