6 Tips for Maintaining a Social Life on a Budget by Guest Author James Lander

Guest Post: Author James Lander is a contributing writer for Couponing, a site that provides coupons and couponing advice.

If you’re in college, one of your biggest worries has to do with money. And now that it’s vacation, it can be such a feat toiling to make ends meet while trying to maintain a little semblance of a social life. Without intuitive planning tips and frugal budgeting, your financial woes could easily spiral out of control, wiping out your savings and earning you a poor credit score.

Fortunately for college goers, there are a couple of tips that can help you take a grip of your financial troubles by effectively managing your money. Use these tips as you start a new semester.

1. Know where and how your money is spent

A lot of young people wouldn’t be bothered to know exactly what they spend their money on each week. For most, as long as the frequent expenses are covered - such as food, entertainment, gas - they assume any other expense is fringe and basically negligible. However, you’ll be surprised to find that much of the unaccounted for money was spent when ‘out and about’ on things that could have been avoided. To rid yourself of this habit, start by accounting for every expense and before long, you’ll have noticed areas to improve. Jot down everything you intend to buy in advance for the week, including their prices and stick to that. You’ll still manage to have a decent social life without draining your wallet.

2. Pay your bills automatically

The first time you’ll encounter serious bills as a young adult is at college or just after college and, unless you’re fortunate enough to have a lot of financial support, you’ll have to fend for yourself almost entirely. You have to pay your rent, credit cards (plus their bizarre carrying costs), insurance and cell phone bills, all on their due dates. It’s arduous enough looking for the money to clear them up, let alone remembering the nitty-gritty of each bill (due date, amount, etc). Set up an automatic bill pay and make this burden a thing of the past. Most of the listed bills have online bill pay options that automatically clear the bill on its due date using your bank balance. You just need to provide your banking details and ensure that there’s always enough money and that way, you’ll avoid incurring late fees and penalties – fees and penalties can drain you financially and you’ll have nothing left for your social life.

3. Utilize free things online

Some of the biggest expenses while at college are books and software but interestingly, many of these can also be obtained entirely free of charge over the Internet. You’ll find that it just takes a little sleuthing to find textbook downloads or student discounts. Find other students that have taken the course you’re shopping for and see if you can either borrow or buy their used copies. Most schools also have “listservs” where students can post items for sale – similar to Craigslist. Spending a little more time at this junction can allow you to channel those savings towards your entertainment and social life.

4. Cook your food or have budget meals

If you cannot cook, chances are you’re spending a fortune on prepared meals or eating out. To be honest, the most budget friendly meals - such as generic brand pizzas - are not exactly the ones you can eat day in, day out. You’ll need to learn how to make simple, healthy meals. Start by browsing for cheap, healthy recipes online, Simple Recipes is a good place to start. Ask friends and family for their favorite recipes, those are generally some of the tastiest and easiest foods to make. Don’t be concerned about being “the perfect cook”, you’ll pick up more cooking ideas as you move on. Turn the money-saving food prep time into a social even itself – invite friends over, make it contest or have a potluck.

5. Be keen on discounts

This is especially important if you’re in college as there are all sorts of student discounts at eateries, cinemas, and stores. Some discounts may not sound like they would have any effect on your life, but they can, and will, add up. Take the Seattle Art Museum, with student ID admission it is a suggest $9 versus $15. If you go twice a month for a year, that’s $144 in savings! Many students feel embarrassed to ask for discounts but look at it from another perspective: it’s not going to last forever, so take advantage of this essentially free money!

6. Develop financial frugality

It can be tempting to splurge on every new gadget that is released. Doing it once in a while is fine but when it becomes a habit, it will be a drain on your funds and therefore your social life. If you’re really into tech stuff, consider joining the AV club. If it’s writing, try out the newspaper – you might even get paid to do what you love! Knowing what your school provides as extracurricular clubs is a great way to learn more about what you’re interested in, finding like-minded people and just having the opportunity to try things out without having to pay for it.

Young adulthood can be a difficult period, being more financially aware can make your ability to enjoy your life simpler.

Event Card Design by Ebony Brown | Broke Wide Open at the Medicine Show Theatre in NYC 12/12

New York, NY - New York native, Rock WILK, playwright, performer, composer and subway “creative” performs his life’s work, BROKE WIDE OPEN, as a “Thank You” tribute to his audience, supporters and patrons of the arts on Monday, December 12, 2011 at 6pm (doors open at 6pm; show starts at 8pm) located at The Medicine Show Theatre, 549 West 52nd Street, 3rd Floor, New York, NY 10019 (between 10th and 11th Ave.) BROKE WIDE OPEN, written, composed and performed by Rock WILK, is directed by Stephen Bishop Seely and production sponsored by Jack Sharkey. Originally conceived as an album almost five years ago, BROKE WIDE OPEN is an evocative, soul baring musical about the true life story of Rock WILK’s adoption, identity and search for home.

An evening of shared experiences and humble beginnings, this celebration and performance will be live, documented and remembered. Famous Famiglia Pizzeria is providing a generous donation of their world famous pizza – a gesture of support that has come full circle. Rock WILK was their very first customer; loyal since Famous Famiglia Pizzeria first opened their doors to the neighborhood (on 96th Street in Amsterdam Avenue in New York City) in 1986.

High energy, honest, and unforgettable, BROKE WIDE OPEN is a poetic and orchestral unveiling of truth with Rock WILK as both maestro and menace. In BROKE WIDE OPEN, Rock WILK, fostered three times and finally adopted as a baby, takes us on a journey where he recounts and relives life changing consequences and decisions. Like martyr, like savior, like rebel without pause, Rock WILK is insistently fighting to enlighten and protect anyone and everyone in his path. A force, a hurricane, a cyclone of well intentioned chaos, Rock WILK is a tempest of love; he is valor and destruction all wrapped up into one. Testing the limits of every relationship in his life, Rock WILK’s journey to explore cause, and find home, becomes both incessant and reluctant. Emotionally gripping and spiritually giving, BROKE WIDE OPEN is also hopeful with pockets of laugh out-loud, comedic revelation. Rock WILK’s transgressions and triumphs throughout BROKE WIDE OPEN inspire unsolicited introspection; like a mirror and milestone, this theater piece compels many to face themselves and transcend to that which they are open and willing.

Inside the Perfect Circle: The Odyssey of Joel Thome

Inside the Perfect Circle: The Odyssey of Joel Thome, by True Form Pictures will debut a screening of the film as a part of the NJ Film Festival this September!

Who doesn't know composer, professor, Grammy Award Winner, Pulitzer Prize Nominee, sweet heart, and life warrior, Joel Thome?  Music Theory wasn't my favorite class, but Professor Thome managed to become one of my favorite people the semester that I was in his class. His heart, passion and determination not only to show up, despite
life's tolls and taunting, regressive temptations of tenor, but to actually be an engaging and committed professor in the classroom is remarkable.  A celebrity and musical phenomena in his own right, he's a musical gem on campus; a nod to the professorial quality at Purchase College.  If you're a student in the Conservatory of Music at Purchase, find Professor Joel and PICK his brain!  http://www.insidetheperfectcircle.com/

Earsay Benefit: Transforming Trauma into Art | Purchase College Faculty Warren Lehrer & Wife, Judith Sloan Makes a Difference in the Lives of Immigrant Teenagers

Earsay Benefit: Transforming Trauma into Art hosted by WNYC's Brian Lehrer held at the Society for Ethical Culture Center in New York City (one block from Lincoln Center), was an evening of monologues, dance, hip hop, music and poetry with performances by: Universes, Carl Hancock Rux, Judith Sloan, Warren Lehrer, Elise Knudson. Musical guests: Jie-Song Zhang and Krussia of the Stone Forest Ensemble and MiWi LaLupa. Also actors read excerpts from Judith Sloan and Warren Lehrer's book Crossing the BLVD. They  included: Bridget Kelso, Chris Kamau, Justin Hudson, Catherine Hanna, Bridgit Antoinette Evans, Vaimoana Niumeitolu, Prerana Reddy, and Jonathan Stuart (from Viper Records), and a special performance by high school students from EarSay’s Transforming Trauma Into Art theatre project.

WHAT IS EARSAY?

EarSay is an artist driven 501 (c) 3 non-profit arts organization dedicated to uncovering and portraying stories of the uncelebrated. Founded by Warren Lehrer (Purchase College SUNY School of Art+Design, Graphic Design Professor) and (accomplished wife) Judith Sloan in 1999, their projects bridge the divide between documentary and expressive forms in books, exhibitions, on stage, in sound & electronic media. They are committed to fostering understanding across cultures, generations, gender and class, through artistic productions and education. They bring their work to theatres, museums, schools, prisons, festivals and universities. [info courtesy www.earsay.org, visit the links provided at the end of this post]

A NOTE OF THANKS

Judith and Warren, what an experience!!! I'm honored to have been in the presence of such powerful artists, activists and youth! What unfolded this Saturday evening was concentrated, creative, collaborative, eye-opening insanity (the good kind) with the perfect dose of humor and gravity. Anyone who cares about meaningful theater, education, music, graphic-literary performance art, youth and the immigrant experience aught to know about Earsay and support, support, support!

I can still hear Brian Lehrer's voice:  "If two hundred people gave $10 a month on their credit cards the program would have 50% of its budget. It costs $500 per child for the entire year when the program is at full capacity."  When put in this perspective, I think  many would agree that giving becomes less of a question. [Image from facebook via Judith Sloan]

Thank you Judith and Warren for the work that you do! Keep Going!!!

Here are some video clips of Earsay's previous events similar to what transpired last night at the Society for Ethical Culture on West 64th Street in New York City (when new videos become available, I'll post them):

I see Purchase People! | Urban Voices Heard : The Art Of Creation Women's History Month Event | March 2011

I see Purchase people! Purchase College SUNY folks are everywhere! Recently, I ran into a fellow alumna at The Art Of Creation event held in honor of Women's History month at El Fogon Center for the Arts located at 989 Home Street in the Bronx. Features for The Art Of Creation included: Lo Anderson-Poet, Paradigm-Poet Peggy Robles-Alvarado-Poet, Amma Whatt-Singer, Passion NoLastNecessary-Poet, and Visual Artist Malanya Graham, Hosted By Jamica.

Intimate, open, and direct, The Art Of Creation  was comprised of  heartfelt spoken word, music, conversation, and a live painting!  The dialogue that each artists' work created was engaging and informative.  Women's issues were discussed and light was shed on common misconceptions associated with titles, gender roles and classifications in the gay/homosexual community, sparked by spoken word piece's such as "I am a Stud." Worth every minute of the four hour sojourn from the comfort of my couch, I am thankful to have bared witness and been a apart of The Art of Creation.

Here are a few snapshots from the event, more will be posted, visit again soon!

NYFW 2011 Work For Lexington Style Magazine | Where Was Purchase SUNY's Fashion Line?

Most Purchase College SUNY students are fashion trendsetters, head-turners and innovators of style. Popular questions outside of academics, the arts and grub are, Where did you get that? Buy that? Or find that? Students will often tell you that they made whatever it is themselves, a friend made it, or that they got it from someplace that has an interesting story behind it.

On campus, individuality and creative freedom is expressed through attire, hair, art and whatever else is capable of making a statement, be it quiet or out-loud. Dropping the jaws of folks who can't believe their eyes nor the garb is something that many Purchase kids do effortlessly, not necessarily on purpose. Their style isn't usually dictated by season or fashion trends, it tends to be organically driven and constructed from inner stuff such as personality and affinity; a unique fabric indeed.

While photographing the Fall/Winter 2011 fashion lines of  popular and upcoming designers including Project Runway's Winner, Leanne Marshall, I imagined Purchase's fashion line gracing Gregory Moore's New York Fashion Week runway event held at the Helen Mills Event Space & Theater.  Alex London's line stood out as a Purchase pick. It must of been the deer antlers on her models' backs, wired mouth pieces, muddy bare feet or "I dare you say something" hair!

Here's a few snap shots and layout work that I did for Lexington Style Magazine. Thus, my New York Fashion Week cherry has been popped!

Broke Wide Open by Rock Wilk at the SoulSWEET Sanctuary in the Bronx | by Ebony Brown

After seeing Rock Wilk perform at Urban Voices Heard Write Out Loud 2-Year Anniversary event held at El Fogon Center for the Arts in the Bronx, I was officially 'fiend-out' for a second serving of his verbal gumbo soup. Considering the place from which it was concocted, I knew that his words would get stuck in my teeth, making them harder to digest. Words like, "she, nine, repeated, acts, shame, and grown man" had certainly turned my stomach but not my head. To some extent, I knew what I was getting into when I decided to see Broke Wide Open, but I wasn't fully prepared for the story that unfolded.

Broke Wide Open is an utterly engaging, one-man show performed by Rock Wilk, one of New York City's most committed orators and prolific writers.  Independent of Purchase College  SUNY,  Broke Wide Open was recently held at the SoulSWEET Sanctuary in the Bronx; an unlikely tourist locale with a reach that extends beyond the arts and into the community –  providing support for young mothers and parents in need. Currently a traveling show, suggestive of the main character’s journey,  Broke Wide Open tactfully spews its ‘ejaculative’ ooze on the good-old, common wishful thinking associated with the better life a child is hoped to experience post adoption. From the perspective of the adopted, Broke Wide Open beautifully unveils the mind flogging pandemonium that crescendos with age as the main character, Rock Wilk searches for the woman whose womb he had been conceived but yet consoled.

Rock’s performance was comprised of the stuff that people often contain, mask or manage in order to evade the fear of judgment, rejection or self-fulfilling, prophetic abandonment. My senses were immediately courted by the wonderfully balanced entourage of literal and metaphoric allusions – euphemisms excluded. Whether on a set designed stage or a ‘hole in the wall', Rock’s life is both the venue and the play. Do yourself a favor and indulge!

Debuted in September 2010 at the Medicine Show Theater, Broke Wide Open continues to develop as Rock considers the feedback of his audience – perfecting one of the most honest and powerfully delivered, one-man shows on the road.

Broke Wide Open is an example of the raw creative expression and cultural enrichment that exists off-campus, easily serving as a priceless addition to the college experience, especially for students in the performing arts conservatories at Purchase College or elsewhere. Students seriously pursuing their craft would not only have much to gain in witnessing a true performance artist in motion - they would also have the opportunity to give their feedback, pose their inquiries and learn from the question and answer session held at the end of the show.

Audience members at the SoulSWEET Sanctuary shared their own personal struggles and triumphs with adoption. In retrospect, I  remember thinking about how you never know of someone's burdens or blessings, especially those who we passively encounter until they express the least imagined. Both Rock and the audience attested to this.

In the unglorified and often underfunded arts spaces of the Bronx, there lie pockets of soul, truth and penetrating artistry to be experienced, appreciated and supported. Although Broke Wide Open isn't scheduled to take place at the SoulSWEET Sanctuary again, anytime soon, spoken word and open mic events are usually held every Saturday. The SoulSWEET Sanctuary is located only 35-45 minutes from Purchase College SUNY.

If you're looking to support an artist whose passion seems to proliferate from his life experience of being an adopted child who's on a quest to find his birth mother, then consider supporting Rock Wilk. Purchase tickets to his next show, or buy up his inventory of goods via his website! Rock is looking to bring his show to Chicago, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Berkeley, Seattle, Denver and ultimately Paris!  If you or someone you know can help make this possible, visit Rock's site and reach out.

A Few Snapshots! Write Out Loud by Urban Voices Heard Celebrates Its 2-Year Anniversary at El Fogon Center for the Arts | by Ebony Brown

Write Out Loud, the spoken word/poetry event series brought to you every second Saturday of the month by the Bronx's own UrbanVoices Heard (UVH), hosted by John "Chance" Acevedo of El Grito De Poetas celebrated it's two year anniversary in it's new home at El Fogon Center for the Arts earlier this month. Present for only the latter portion of the event, the high energy and insane talent was nothing short of inspiring and incredible - I'm so glad that I attended!  Purchase College students, notorious for their open, creative, sharp and trend setting affinities would have enjoyed the show as well as the cozy, welcoming venue. They'll be spotted at El Fogon soon - and on the mic, I'm sure!  Did you know that one of the most notable, multifaceted, female, spoken word artist in the New York area graduated from Purchase College SUNY? Yes, none other than Ms. Amanda Diva.

Although Amanda wasn't on the scene at El Fogon Center for the Arts, the place was blazing with features such as: Tito Luna of  El Grito De Poetas and Rock Wilk of “Broke Wide Open”. A linguistic craftsman, Tito wrapped very serious and touchy subject matter into comical packaging, enabling the audience to imagine the poetry he painted; Rock Wilk's intimate conversation laden with stop, starts, repetitive phrases and spineless intonations was beyond crazy - his content was heavy, direct and penetrating.

El Fogon was a standing- room only, packed with quality poets and Guest Artists who included: Tuan X, Feenix Flame, The MarXman, Janelle Heatley, Majestik Originality, OMNI Blaize, Stillwater, SoSoon, and Rich Story. UVH's own, Passion [No Last Necessary], Ibrahim P.O.E.T Siddiq and James Kennedy. Visit UVH's  facebook event page to view a few videos from this event. Join UVH's facebook group page! Below are a few snapshots of the artists who closed out the show with a bang, as well as some who made the event possible!

Urban Voices Heard - Write Outloud! Bronx Poets Inspiring All Who'll listen.

Every second Saturday of the month, Z'novia's (restuarant/bar) in the Bronx is filled with energetic, rhyme spewing, truth spit'n, haiku drop'n, word twist'n spoken word artists and the folks who love them. As resident photographer, I had the pleasure of  photographing an Urban Voices Heard's open-mic poetry event "Write Out loud" hosted by John "Chance" Acevedo of El Poetas and organized by Ms. Latanya DeVaughn, founder of Urban Voices Heard."

As a Purchase College SUNY student years ago, poetry circles, conga jam sessions, and random acts of dance took place on campus anywhere that a heart could beat;  that is,  until university police rolled in and shut it down.  Nostalgic and engaging, Urban Voices Heard - Write Out Loud open mic event series is an event worth schlepping from wherever to both inspire and be inspired.
