MFA Graduation Exhibition Series at the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery | Purchase College SUNY

Purchase College SUNY, School of Art+Design MFA candidates present a series of solo and two-person shows at the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery on view April 5th through April 30th with receptions taking place April 15th, 22nd and 29th from 5-7pm.

Scott Daniel Ellison starts off the series with Raccoons, an exhibition of found photographs of people interacting with the misunderstood and highly adaptable raccoon; the photographs negotiate the ever-changing boundaries that divide human beings from their natural habitat. Tom Sarver combines humor, social commentary and low-tech gadgetry to explore relationships between the art world and the everyday. In Queasy, Sarver examines medical phobias and anxieties. In her exhibition, Walking A Fine Line, Merav Ezer explores the psychological and physical implications of self-created environments. Finishing off the series is Separate Heads, a two-person show featuring the work of Neil Dvorak and Rachel Wiecking. Neil Dvorak creates objects that investigate the relationship between artifact and functionality, while Rachel Wiecking's work uses techniques of casting, printmaking and sculpture to force collisions between physiological and utilitarian systems.

PRESS RELEASE: http://bit.ly/ci0oLb
DIRECTIONS: http://bit.ly/aotfS

Curator, Kirsten Nelson is also a Purchase College, SUNY Alumna (MFA) class of 2004 who is currently exhibiting work at Frederieck Taylor Gallery, assembly required, which closes February 20, 2010.

The exhibit, assembly required consists of new sculpture by Kirsten Nelson that is constructed out of common home building materials. These sculptures exist between what they seem to be and what they seem to be lacking; what is still required in order to understand them as realized objects or idealist representations. They exist in a state of suspended reference, as if they were available in the Sears Roebuck & Co. catalogs from the 1900’s as “ready-cut” kit homes with construction methods that allowed for a simplified do-it-yourself method of assembly.

C O R R U G A T E D furniture by Brian Gladwell (School of Art+Design Artist-In-Residence Spring '09)
Opening Reception: Friday, June 19th, 5 - 7 pm

Salon: Friday, June 19th at 2pm (Join Brian and guests for an informal discussion of ideas triggered by this new work.)

On View: June 19th – July 24th, 2009 Gallery Hours: 10 – 5 pm, M-F (or by appointment)

Uncommonly Good Materials

Celebrating the opening of C O R R U G A T E D, an exhibition of recent furniture by resident artist Brian Gladwell in the Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery at Purchase College, the public is invited to the first Windgate Artist-in-Residency Salon on Friday, June 19, 2009, at 2:00 pm. The Salon will be followed by the opening reception for C O R R U G A T E D at 5:00 pm. All of which was coordinated by Artist-In-Residence Director, Dennis Fitzgerald.

Studio furnituremakers, with their blend of technical savvy and imaginative reach, are uniquely placed to explore the promise of new or overlooked materials for use in furniture. Brian Gladwell’s arresting new work in cardboard proves the point. The elegant furniture made in cork by Dan Michalik sends the same message. And so do the powerful benches and tables Jim Zivic hews from hunks of anthracite coal. Makers like these draw on their special perspective to link unexpected industrial materials to our daily lives with beauty and purpose.

As environmental concerns bring new attention to common materials, the strategies and sensibilities specific to craft practices are resulting in sophisticated objects quite distinct from those produced by production designers, visual artists or DIYers. Studio furnituremakers, many trained in the use of wood, a material so thoroughly explored and so well understood, bring to their assessment of new materials extremely high standards in terms of the depth to which they ought to be explored and understood.

The Salon will be an opportunity for a small group of invited makers and thinkers to come together and share ideas around the opportunities presented by overlooked or underutilized materials. It will open with brief presentations by Gladwell, Michalik and Zivic on the motives and implications of their use of materials that they favor, followed by an open discussion centered on this and other materials in the context of furniture.

The Salon is free and open to the public. It will be held in the Visual Arts Building in Room 1025

The Salon participants will include:

Jon Binzen
Brian Gladwell
Elizabeth Guffey
Matt Hutton
Daniel Michalik
Don Miller
David Richardson
Rosanne Somerson
Jim Zivic
and...
Dennis FitzGerald, Director of the Artist-In-Residence Program at the School of Art+Design at Purchase College, SUNY and former President of The Furniture Society, currently serving on its Advisory Board.

Art at the Edge of Campus - Purchase College, SUNY | by Ebony Brown

(Pictured: The the W-1 parking lot side of the Visual Arts Building, the Red Running Man (1 of 4) are the Sculptural work of A+D Alumnus, Andy Fennell | Photo: ©Ebony Brown)

Why would anyone in their right mind, want to walk to the edge of campus, beyond the esteemed Neuberger Museum of Art and enter the brown, brick depths of "Where the hell am I" notoriously known as the Visual Arts building?

Well there is the obvious reason, students, staff and faculty made a conscious choice to patron the Visual Arts (VA) building when they gave blood to become pupils, professors or administrators of art. Who said 'getting-in' was easy? Then, there are the friends of those who frequent the VA building who accidentally stumble upon its pockets of hidden bling in the form of artwork hanging proud or left in some undisclosed corner of the building. You never know what insanely, creative piece of work you'll find.

Usually, my city girl quick steps only render collages of colorful swooshes in my periphery when passing through the halls of the VA building. Today was different. I had to post a "Course Update Notice" on one of the classroom doors and I was stopped dead in my tracks. How could I fit the overflowing mound of thought and artful execution of one particular piece of work into my breakfast deprived mind and “TGIF” eyes; lusting for Saturday’s rest didn't last long. The work of an emerging, young Printmaker commanded my attention, I did nothing but stand there to admire the work.

The last piece of art that captured my attention in such a manner was the work of Sue Coe. Represented by Galerie St. Etienne, Coe was a 'must see' Visting Artist whose talk was sponsored by School of Art+Design, last semester. Every Wednesday Visiting Artist's Talks take place at 6:30PM, in room 1016 of the VA building, free and open to the public, like viewing artwork in the halls or in the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery.

So there I was standing in the hall unable to pull myself away from the print, the babies held me at gun point, literally. On the right, their "Frankenstein-ish" mother appeared to be a mere mechanical portal for their production. On her back with legs jacked open, her pelvic canal is far from lady-like; expelling one baby after the next, 'litters' of infants are dreadfully gliding away from their maker along a conveyor belt, initially much like an undisturbed blood path. This labor isn't fit for human nor animal. Factory farmed, infinite, teeny tots with varying facial expressions and bodily gestures seem to know of their fate before the production line equips them with ammunition and gear as they progress through phases of the conveyor belt.

Nipples clamped, like cows hooked to a milking machine, mama is merely their maker but is the vessel by which their “ba-ba’s” are filled. Solo Eyeballs and Televisions (CRT) with wings and emanating screens at the top of the page are like puppeteers, clearly running the show. What's the message?

If you have not seen this piece, it’s certainly worth sucking up the momentary wind-chill to come and see it while it’s still on display here on the first floor of the Visual Arts building (adjacent to the Neuberger Museum, near W-1 parking) While you’re here, feel free to stop by the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery (M-F, 10-5PM) The work of Art+Design Alumni, Gregory Crewdson is currently on display. Artwork in the hall can be seen seven days a week through Midnight!

What is Fairey Telling the A.P.? by Ebony Brown

(Image: Mannie Garcia/Associated Press - nytimes.com, feb 8, 2009)

Speak of the devil, my previous blog entry nearly kissed Shepard Fairey's feet, placing him on the bricky pedestal of the School of Art+Design's Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery. Although copyright infringement threatens to dissolve Obama poster boy's cloud nine as per this NEW YORK TIMES ARTICLE , I refuse to discredit Fairey's contribution to the college.

Fairey, and other artist who regularly 'appropriate' existing art into their own artwork are probably well acquainted with the statutes of copyright infringement.

David Schwarz Project 6: Infobbable, the graffiti/street art inspired group show held at the Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery in which Shepard Fairey participated, exposed students and visitors to a contemporary body of graphic art that was both engaging and legal; no arrests were made (this time). While DSP6: Infobbable may have unnerved some, the exhibition seemed to be well received by both the on and off campus community.

Any thoughts on reappropriation and copyright infringment as it relates to Fairey's case or similar cases?
