Who Cares About Art, I have Tenure! | Faculty Group Exhibition Opening Wed. Sept. 9th | Purchase College SUNY

Despite the negative connotation associated with tenure; the known culprit for complacency in education, many tenured Purchase College professors remain driven, dedicated and current. Art+Design students are afforded the opportunity to interact with and pick the brains of Purchase College professors/professionals who genuinely care about their education long after tenure.

Working professionals in the fields of painting and drawing, sculpture, 3-D media, photography, printmaking and graphic design, the faculty of the School of Art+Design will be exhibiting work at the start of the Fall 2009 semester. Full-time Art+Design faculty will exhibit work on campus from August 31 - October 2, 2009 which will be the first of a series of exhibitions showcasing their diverse artistic perspectives. An Opening Reception will be held on September 9, 2009, 5-7 PM.

I Feel Fat - Thank You White Plains Diner | Purchase College, SUNY

I feel fat just thinking about that oversized, juicy, grilled chicken wrap with roasted red peppers and mozzarella cheese that I had at a diner in White Plains. While the ingredients aren't really bad (unless you're a vegetarian), the portion size was a pleasant surprise but way too much for me to 'down' in one sitting.

The White Plains Diner, not fancy nor expensive also satisfies the wee morning hunger of Purchase College students and the students of neighboring colleges such as Manhattanville, Pace and others. Students usually find there way to the diner around 3am-ish, after some festive event on campus or a night out in New York City.

Though I prefer City Limits Diner , which is located right across from the Westchester County Center, the White Plains Diner is only ten minutes from Purchase College and open 24hours.

Dead Chicks & A Poem | Purchase College, SUNY

My doggy-bag committed suicide in my left hand while my camera couldn't stop staring as it dangled from the right. I almost stepped on them but squealed in disbelief while trying to avoid the pavement. My lunch began to panic seeking immediate exit somewhere along the Lincoln Avenue underpass and the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery.

Images captured against their will
Ebony snapped, the reality spilled
What could live on in an image
When it, itself is without life?
The paper dead once struck by light
Shortly after
Framed portrayals peek when dipped
Arrested memories released
They experience. . .
Conjured attributions
We project and stare
Tracing form and resolution
Stripped naked and bare
With his camera,
The photographer shoots
An ebb & flow of word
The critic lets loose
Still born, the photos
hung by his noose
Images eroded
Saddened and deduced.

Gordon Parks Photography Collection Now Resides at the Purchase College Library

Its not a rumor, the photograph collection of LIFE magazine's first, African American Photographer, Gordon Parks now resides at the newly renovated, noted Library of Purchase College SUNY. If you haven't heard about this consider yourself officially informed. The strongest dose of culture and art in New York's Westchester County is right here on campus at the Neuberger Museum, the Performing Arts Center and the Purchase College Library.

"As the first black photographer at LIFE magazine, Gordon Parks masterfully chronicled everything from the Civil Rights movement to gang life to the worlds of fashion and art. With equal parts grit and beauty, he photographed poor families living in squalor as well as professional athletes and glamorous stars. His iconic images of boxer Muhammad Ali are among his most well-remembered and widely-reproduced, but his portraits of neighbors...and the signature “American Gothic” image of a black cleaning woman holding mops in both hands are stunning images that underscored race and class issues in mid-20th century America." Strip Tease, Zombie Prom, Culture Shock, Fall Ball; The Orientation Raunch Begins! | Purchase College SUNY

[Photo by Sam Branman, Photography BFA Alumnus '09]

An earful of 'orientation talk' broke my concentration while photographing cob webs that formed on one of the outdoor sculptures of the Neuberger Museum. I heard terms like "Fall Ball", "Zombie Prom" and "Strip Tease", there was even a mild debate between orientation leaders regarding whether or not "Zombie Prom" had now become more popular than "Fall Ball". I felt inclined to add "Culture Shock" and "Pancake Madness" as popular Purchase events but my 'two cents' went unsolicited.

Whatever the case, only at Purchase College could you encounter celebrities with hit songs, drag-queen shows, dead people parties and faculty/staff serving pancakes to students at ten o'clock at night with a live DJ cranking music as if they were in a popular night club.

This past year, Drake (from Degrassi, lil Weezy's protege) and other popular music acts performed at Culture Shock for two evenings straight. Even Destiny's Child (the original group) performed at Culture Shock back in the days before Beyonce or should I say 'Mrs. Sasha Fierce' took the world by storm.

If there was a concert to be held in your hometown, a nearby college or at Purchase College and you had a say in the top three artists or bands that could perform, what top three artists or bands would you chose and what favorite song would they absolutely have to perform?

Your Schoolmate is Famous & You're Not! | Victor Cruz, Purchase College Alumnus in JR Commercial

Victor Cruz is hilarious and was always one to entertain while in college. Its great to see the people that you went to school with on television while you secretly envy their success and ponder the many ways you could kick your own butt for perhaps, letting certain life situations bully your dreams. Even for those who are very content in there non-public, non-famous and non-whatever else existence, there seems to always be that ounce of "damn, I should of, could of, would of done..." but didn't and still not doing.

George Elliot once said, "It's never too late to be what you might have been."

Checkout Victor Cruz in his latest commercial below. Can you think of a situation that you experienced where you were in a position like the guy behind the desk? Honestly, would you remain as calm?

Don't Shoot! I Need to Finish This Email | Purchase College SUNY

I nearly peed my pants just a little bit. What would you do if you happened to looked over your shoulder while at work and there was a man standing outside your window holding something resembling a machine gun?

Construction resumes on campus with a drill screaming right outside my office window. Of course I'll finish this email, edit that press release and expect a parent to remain calm when I tell her the truth about scholarship opportunities at the top of my lungs. I can't see a reason why any of this wouldn't be possible.

Poetic & Practically Parentless; Group/Foster Home Kids Speak Out | Purchase College SUNY

Last night, I attended a slam poetry event held at the White Plains Library, free of charge; it was worth the fifteen minute drive from Purchase College. The bulk of the audience seemed to be young, male, teens of color currently living in foster care or group homes namely 'the system'. These youth spoke of drug addicted mothers, broken homes and the force fed, day-to-day stress that they feel many adults undermine simply because of their young age.

Eboni Hogan, the featured poet was engaging, passionate and inspiring. Her list of credentials render her as one the top spoken word artists in the New York City area; at least it sounded that way when she was introduced. She had a delivery like Jennifer Hudson or Jill Scott; raw, conscious and commanding. Fearless and full of energy, people of different ages, ethnicity and poetic styles shared their original work during open mic.

Comic relief and a break from the emotionally heavy poetic themes came from a girl possibly no older than twelve years of age who dedicated a poem to her father. Incidentally, he was present and facilitated the slam contest. Her poem was about the things she learned from him and was expressed through the use of witty car and computer analogies.

Poetry Slam night at the library was well worth it, I'll definitely attend again! If we don't support our youth, then who will? As dull and dry as "White Plains" sounds its not as lame as possibly perceived. Located only ten to fifteen minutes from Purchase College SUNY, one could actually forgo the forty five minute trip to New York City and be pleasantly surprised. For now, I'm mustering up the courage to step up to the mic.

Michael Jackson Tribute Featuring Purchase College SUNY Alumna, Moses Harper

Moses Harper, Purchase College SUNY Alumna is featured in several MJ tribute videos. Having gone to school with Moses, a true MJ fan and music devotee, I witnessed snippits her dance skills back in my college days (when paying rent meant you were old); it was always something amazing to watch. It seems like MJ taught her the moves himself...

"College Food" & "Finger-Lick'n" in the Same Sentence? Something's Wrong Here | Purchase College SUNY

Who would of known that one of the best BBQ ribs one could eat would be cooked-up on a 'loaner' grill (courtesy Chartwells) at Purchase College. This 'finger-lick'n food I'm referring to wasn't prepared by the college's food service staff (no-brainer), but I give due recognition to the vegetarian cafe 'Terra Ve' which has been more than friendly to my stomach and flirty with my tastebuds.

Jarret Foster, Financial Aid Staff and undercover chef prepared the ribs pictured above, he certainly 'put his foot in it' as we 'Bronx, NY folk' with southern roots would say. The chicken, burgers, peach pie and cupcakes were tasty too.

Though it wasn't my department's BBQ, the staff of Enrollment Services were very generous in allowing me to fill my belly and walk away with a make shift doggie bag for my co-workers. With a Pinapple-Mango Smoothie in one hand (yes they even had a blender) and my camera in the other hand, I couldn't resist capturing the moment.
