Giant Crusty Feet and Nathan Margoni | MFA Artwork Currently On View, Reception to be held April 30th 5-7PM at Purchase College SUNY

Just the thought of Nathan Margoni's artwork gives me a mild case of adult 'heebeejeebees'. Large, gross and detailed, his sculpture is both repulsive and beautiful.

Currently on view at the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery (as a part of the MFA Graduation 'rotating thesis' Exhibition series), Nathan's Opening Reception will be held on Thursday, April 30th 5-7PM to which you are invited. All exhibitions are free and open to the public. The last day to view Nathan's show is Friday, May 1, 2009.

Gamers!!! "I Got Next" Movie Trailer produced by Ian Cofino, Purchase College SUNY, Art+Design Graduating Senior

Purchase College SUNY, School of Art+Design graduating senior, Ian Cofino, has produced a motion graphic movie trailer for a feature-length movie currently in the works.

The arcade and gaming world are major contributers to his 7,500+ hits on “You Tube” , only after a few days of posting.

INTERVIEW SNIPPET:
"Four11: Who or what has really been your biggest drive in seeing the completion of this piece? I know it must take a lot of work, so there must be some support group.

IC: There have been so many people who have supported me so far, I can’t name one person or group of people as my primary support group, but my parents have certainly been a huge help as well as my project advisor, Robin Lynch. My friends at Purchase and in the fighting game community have always been there whenever I need help or had problems. So everyone has really been incredibly supportive of the project right from the get go. (Interview excerpt from thefour11.org)"

A California gallery will be showing a refined and longer version of this piece in a few weeks. He has been asked to be a panelist in an upcoming gaming convention. He has been invited to film at various international gaming conventions.

Check out Reviews of Ian’s work in the press (and wide mention of Purchase College) in addition to a radio interview: Podcast - April 7, 2009 “An Interview With The Creator of I Got Next”

Congratulations Ian and many thanks to the faculty at Purchase for their help especially Ms. Robin Lynch, Ian’s mentor and academic advisor.

Neil Fridd; Eclectic, Engaging & Truly Entertaining | Purchase College SUNY BFA Show Down!

Photo by Nicholas Roberts for The New York Times, ONE-MAN MENAGERIE Neil Fridd of Terror Pigeon Dance Revolt!

My mouth is still on the floor, lyrics are running wild, and my mind is wondrously tuning in and out of the high energy, interactive, musical performance of Neil Fridd, Sculpture, BFA Candidate '09.

I find myself juxtaposed between my right and left brain where my heart is left to referee. Writing about my experience at Neil's show isn't sitting well with my right brain; dare I share this experience with you, without video footage or photos of my own.

Though experience is usually more telling, word of mouth exist for a reason; how else would people know the good from the ugly? I must say, the onslaught of human offering and soul bearing by Neil, his "band" and amped-up supporters was nothing short of incredible. A witness to something truly honest, free-spirited and engaging, I urge you to indulge in 'the' Fridd; if you're a performing artist, prepare to find renewed inspiration!

Neil Fridd is performing tonight 7-10PM, KICKIN' AND SCREENIN' at the Hudson Valley Center for Contemporary Art (HVCCA) in Peekskill, NY! MORE INFO HERE: online version

Here’s the New York Times review regarding Neil’s previous show. http://tinyurl.com/dm2w5w

"I wanna be there!" keeps replaying in my head, I'm singing Neil's lyrics
...aloud..., my co-workers are looking at me funny...

Podcast, Smodcast, Bahumbug! | Part 4 of 4: How do you create separate RSS feeds? | Viral Marketing HW | Purchase College

Part 4 of 4

My questions to you (or someone who can help) as it relates to RSS feeds and podcasts:

  1. How does one create separate RSS feeds for their blog posts, blog comments and podcasts?

  2. Is this possible in blogger?

  3. Does WordPress allow separate feeds for each of the elements mentioned?

FeedBurner has achieved this on their blog site. Check it out by clicking their RSS links. They have separate RSS feeds for their posts, podcasts and comments.

Blogger permits separate post and comment feeds by way of their default "widget" option but its hard to generate a feed url for podcasts.

I'm open to your help!

Podcast, Smodcast, Bahumbug! PART 3 of 4: My Podcast Set-Up | Viral Marketing HW | Purchase College SUNY

Part 3 of 4:

HERE'S MY PODCAST SETUP...

1. SOFTWARE: Adobe SoundBooth (allows multitrack layering & editing, doesn't accept midi files)

2. HARDWARE: PC Computer (but MAC is the best!) & Digital Microphone (Stereo Condenser MIC) ......

3. WEB HOST: For now its YAHOO (not Free) MEDIAFIRE is free and FTP not needed.

4. FTP (File Transfer Protocol/ A way to upload your mp3 file to a web host): I didn't need it for YAHOO or MEDIAFIRE but I recommend FileZilla if you're using a web host that requires FTP.

5. PUBLISHER: Select the 'enclose' a link in a new blog post. (Blogger has this option, I assume other blog providers have a way to 'enclose' links as well.) Once the link is enclosed, web based applications such as FeedBurner will publish and or recognize your enclosures (after registering your podcast with them) by showing a 'play' button when you click the RSS link that you've placed on your blog.

6. ENVIRONMENT: A 'comfy' couch, patience and a quiet space wouldn't hurt. (My computer's fan was really loud during the making of my podcast, but the mic didn't pick it up.)

7. RSS (Really Simple Syndication): (a way for folks to subscribe or receive your podcasts) I used FeedBurner.

What's your podcast setup?
What software do you use?
Should I post a photo of my set up?

Podcast, Smodcast, Bahumbug! Part 2 of 4: My Process | Viral Marketing HW | Purchase College SUNY

Part 2 of 4
I never really knew what a podcast was or how to define it until recently (slapping myself for saying that aloud) To my understanding, a podcast is a web hosted, audio file (mp3) with various functionalities. Below is my podcasting experience; the process of a first-timer.

Learning how to use my audio software, Adobe Sound Booth, was my first step. Determining subject matter was my next step and imagining how the final podcast should sound followed; one wouldn't create a scripted film without a storyboard, right? Foreseeing the finished product gave me a sense of direction. I settled on making a 'pod-vite' or recorded invite for my upcoming show at the time. The plan was to use my voice and a song playing in the background that would fade in and out based on verbal cues.

I recorded myself an infinite number of times before surrendering to pen and paper. My typed up cue card saved me from the potential 'wee' morning hour grudge work. So, the final recording was almost done and my intercom buzzer scared the 'living daylights' out of me; frick'n delivery guy, rang the buzzer like the police was after him.

With a full belly and a much needed boost, my mp3 was finally recorded. I uploaded it to my web host (yahoo), 'enclosed' (or attached) the mp3 within my (Blogger) blog via 'new post' and finally published it with 'FeedBurner', which recognized my blog's enclosed mp3 link and rendered a handy-dandy 'play' button (when in RSS view).

FeedBurner also provided an RSS feed for both my blog and podcast. In Part 3 I list my podcast setup. Check it out if you're a podcast newbie (like me), feel free to share your first podcasting experience.

Podcast, Smodcast, Bahumbug! | Part 1 of 4: Viral Marketing Homework for the Podcast Newbie, Me | Purchase College SUNY

Part 1 of 4
Podcasting, the Viral Marketing course homework that is proving to be both frustrating and fruitful; rewarding if you're able to get all of the components to work together. Thankfully, all has been working out in my favor (knock on wood) but what if your effort just 'ain't cutting it?' The alternate assignment for the class is to get an article published with 'I don't know'.... three more weeks of class [insert head-banging here]. I'll take the lesser of the two evils. Let's just say that podcasting seemed to be the most viable choice. ...and the saga unfolds, click 'read more' below to continue.

The Viral Marketing course, under the umbrella of the Arts Management program, taught by both Linda Solomon (faculty from the Arts Management program) and Annemarie Gatti (faculty from the Conservatory of Music) was offered during the Spring 2009 semester for the first time ever at Purchase College SUNY. Approximately sixty students are currently enrolled but somehow individual attention is made possible.

All students including myself are required to create and maintain blogs, twitter accounts and various other social networking sites including creating youtube videos and podcasting. All for the purposes of marketing our events, personal causes and or experiences as a student or artist at Purchase College SUNY. Books by Malcolm Gladwell, Chip Heath/Dan Heath, Nicky Kalliongis, optional readings and open mics are also a part of the course.

This blog, "Picture Purchase", is homework in the flesh. Podcasting was indeed a homework of challenge. Checkout Part 2 if you're interested in my podcast process. (Hmmm perhaps this should of been a podcast?)

Woo-hoo! My RSS is finally working!

The RSS Feed for the picture purchase blog is finally working! You may link to or track particular posts that you're interested in by subscribing to them. If you're anticipating seeing your photos or videos, I recommend that you subscribe so you won't miss it when it becomes available! (RSS Image (on the left) 'swiped' from www.bloggerdoctor.com, the website that attempted assisting with resolving my RSS trouble; operant word "attempted". Though they offered good suggestions it didn't help. Problem solved: Since my blog was set to 'private' during the maintenance period, the "RSS" feature was disabled) I lost so much sleep over this, Damn it! Lol!

"Each one Teach one": Printing 101 with John Mastracchio | Purchase College SUNY

I extend my appreciation to my colleague, John Mastracchio, School of Art+Design, Printmaking Lab Technician, who has willfully given his time to show me the ropes of large format printing. A wise woman once said to me "Each One Teach One" and it stuck!

As Communications Coordinator of the School of Art+Design, my duties include managing the development of publicity materials and publications; It would be a service to the School of Art+Design for me to share-in the task of printing & cutting large format work.

"Best of Show" (Fall 2007) | Five Purchase College, Art+Design Students are Honored.

(Image: Painting (cropped) by Alec Spangler, Purchase College, MFA Alumnus '08)

Every Semester students from the School of Art+Design participate in the SUNY Student Art Exhibition held in Albany State Plaza. For six consecutive semesters up to three of five participating students have received 'Best of Show' honors. One year Jennifer Bakalar who is now a graduating senior, won the 'Best of Show Piece' prize of $1000. In addition, she was awarded the honor of having her artwork displayed at the governor's mansion.

To participate the the SUNY Student Art Exhibition, students must be invited by a professor in their board of study and the artwork(s) submitted must also be selected by the referring professor. Students may submit up to three pieces but only five total artworks will entered into the juried exhibition held in Albany, NY.

Check out the article below (link) by LowHud.com about Alec Spangler, Purchase, N.Y.; Patricia Gaeta, Niagara Falls, N.Y.; Kevin Knoerzer of Newburgh, N.Y.; Jennifer Bakalar, Keen, N.H.; and Luke Chase, Valate, N.Y.
