Leah Tacha, Visual Arts MFA candidate honored with $1000 Patricia Kerr Ross Award

Leah Tacha, School of Art+Design MFA Candidate was awarded the $1,000 2009 Patricia Kerr Ross Award.

Ever heard of the saying, "One man's garbage is a another man's treasure"? Well, Leah is a living testament; she transforms (or recycles) discarded/found materials into purposeful, sculptural works of art that effortlessly excites the imaginations of those viewing her work. The Ross Award will enable this emerging artist to continue making artwork while transitioning from academia to the professional art world.

"The Patricia Kerr Ross Award of $1,000 is given annually to an individual selected for excellence, originality and promise..." MORE INFO

As a professed witness of her whimsy, I urge you to experience her work first hand. Exhibiting in three New York Shows in the month of April, the opportunity to see Leah's work is abundant. To learn more about Leah Tacha, check out my interview with her in the previous post.

Las Brisas: One of the Best 'Cheap' Mexican Food Spots in Port Chester, NY | Purchase College SUNY

If you're looking for tasty, authentic Mexican food, 'on the cheap' near Purchase College SUNY, and you don't mind dining at a 'hole in the wall' type of place, check out Las Brisas located 15 minutes from Purchase College. (Las Brisas, 215 Westchester Ave., Port Chester, NY, 914-937-1462)

Its 'dry-erase' menu, dingy pink and gray tiling, foggy mirrors and beat up tables are not pretty but their food is great! If they bring you refried beans instead of black beans or vice versa, keep it, chances are that you'll like it anyway. To avoid this, know exactly what you want at the time that you order and try not to change it midway through ordering.

I usually get a Burrito (Burro) with chicken, black beans and rice with red sauce which I've circled in yellow on the menu photo below. Have you ever eaten there? Share your experience.

Thayer Fellowship Finalist, Leah Tacha, Purchase College, Art+Design MFA Candidate Interviewed by Picture Purchase's Ebony Brown

(Photo by Ebony Brown - cropped/detail shot, Artwork Video coming soon)

I interviewed Leah Tacha, Sculptor, Purchase College SUNY, School of Art+Design MFA Candidate and Thayer Fellowship finalist (in the running for a $7,000 award) on Monday, March 16, 2009 in the Richard & Dolly Maass Gallery. Below are snippits of her responses from our interview.

"There weren't a lot of notable female Sculptors when I was an undergraduate student so it was easy for sculptors such as Yayoi Kusama and Eva Hesse to make an impression on me. Both Yayoi Kusama and Eva Hesse's work embodied a lack of 'following the rules' and I liked that."

"I'll use anything, mostly everything, especially
easily accessible materials because I'm in a constant quest not to spend too much money. These cardboard cylinders over here (currently in the MAASS Gallery) are donations from a carpet company out in Jersey. I made the call and now they know me by name and donate their cardboard-carpet holders to me whenever they're looking to get rid of them."

At this point during the interview, University Police (who are in fact, State Troopers) entered the Richard and Dolly Maass Gallery in the Visual Arts Building and asked "What is this I'm looking at" I kindly asked him, "Well, what does this work invoke or say to you?" and the Officer stepped back for a moment and said, "That over there looks like a present exploding through a Chimney. All of this reminds me of being in a constant state of animated suspension when everything (encountered) is new like when you're kid." An explanation wasn't necessary, he was right.

"I loved The Secret Garden growing up, both the book and movie continues to influence my artwork today as does the landscape of Kansas. I think discovery, beauty and the unexpected can be found in my work similar to how it is in the book" said Leah.

"In terms of people who come to see my work, I hope that they'll get the feeling of sincerity, honesty and humor - its not pretty but it is generous to look at especially when all else seems monotonous and bleak"

"I hope to continue making art, meet new people and I'd like to have more 'artists' friends, being in Grad School sort of allows for this to happen."

"I never felt confident in my first four years of my undergrad college career, in my fifth year (it was a five year program) I was finally able to make an impression on a professor that I thought hated me and I finally felt confident and realized that I wanted to continue making art so I applied to Grad School and went to New York!"

"I want people to remember that they smiled when they saw my work, its abstract but the kind that people can connect to."

Leah Tacha will be interviewed on Tuesday, March 17th by the Thayer Fellowship judges and we wish her luck as she is in the running for $7000! She will also be exhibiting work as apart of the Purchase College, School of Art+Design MFA Group Show, GIMME GIMME at Smith Stewart Gallery on April 17th. (See previous posts for info) Go Leah!

Past, Present & Personal (Purchase College Alumni Exhibit Work at the Arts Exhange Gallery)

Three Purchase College School of Art+Design Alumni are currently exhibiting work at the Arts Exchange Gallery in White Plains, NY. Past, Present and Personal exposes us to a collection of work that ought to be experienced rather than explained.

On the floor to my left, playful yet disturbing zombie-like dolls made of recycled, donated fabric, are either mending, escaping or pulling each other apart. Near the center of the exhibition space is a headdress (of Indian Chief-type) elegantly poised on its pedestal made of intricately welded washers, bolts, chains and nails giving new functionality and value to often forgotten, everyday tools. Finally, around the corner beholds a blue, black pyramid of surveillance (TVs) where army-like figurines are centered and stout as if they are looking out (from the inside of the television screens). Meticulously placed and existing physically amongst visitors within the gallery space, these figurines and televisions (displaying live feed) suggests more than what one can conjure in one visit.

Sara Millman's funky dolls, Michael Rivera's recycled metals and Christopher Kaczmarek's tower of vision(s) are an awesome exemplification of 'Art Gone Wild'. Every piece flashes us with a peek into the artists' mind which leaves those viewing the work wanting more. In lieu of beads, I offer my praise to the artists for creating work that is engaging beyond aesthetics; its easier to admire something that's overtly beautiful and harder to feel connected to something conceptual, the intrigue is well worth it. If you are in the White Plains area, visit The Arts Exchange Gallery on Mamaroneck Avenue (on the same street as the City Center).

Chris Vesper, School of Art+Design Purchase College MFA Candidate will Exhibit Work @ Smith Stewart Gallery in New York City!

"Who The "f" is Chris Vesper?" some of us may be asking ourselves if we don't know him already.

In my search to unveil this hard working, community service oriented, second year, Art+Design Grad student, I've managed to get my hands on some video footage (of his making) that will, at best, expose us to his work.

What inquiries will it rouse, if any? Post your comments and questions and I'll pose them in an upcomming interview!

Warhol at the Neuberger Museum of Art - 60s/70s Party at Purchase College, SUNY | by Ebony Brown)

(Photos: ©Ebony Brown)

With a Silent Auction and Junior Photo Show Reception happening in the Visual Arts Building on the same night, I managed to slide out of the School of Art+Design and slip into the Warhol 60s/70s party held at the Neuberger Museum of Art.

I could almost argue that some students had their very own fairy "Warhol" Godmother incubating in their closets; the costumes were incredible. Purchase College students immersed themselves in Warhol art, live music by Weird Korea, video projections and free food which was "totally delish" as noted by one of the students.

The Neuberger Museum of Art is one of the University's major assets. Students can roll out of bed and into a party-like time warp that arguably contextualizes the art on display and taught in the classroom. Warhol is a global icon; students, faculty and staff have access to art history in the 'flesh'.

Inquiries about Social Networking & Communications; thoughts of a Purchase College Staff Member | by Ebony Brown

Will perfect strangers ever engage in face to face (F2F) conversation, similar to the way it’s done through social media? Does fear ultimately warrant the digital mask?

If we didn't fear the intentions of strangers and their perception of our insecurities to which digital communication masks, would we indulge in more face to face interaction and initiate friendly communication with those unknown and within our social circles?

My D.O.B. is M.I.A. | Purchase College SUNY

People ask me, "How does it feel to not see your birth date on the calendar." I must say it feels normal, except for when I have to answer, "Which day do you celebrate it." I usually have to decide whether I should celebrate it on the last day of February (because I was born in the month of February) or on the day after the 28th (because I was technically born after February 28th). I usually go for the day that has the best weather or both!
I knew a girl in high school who was born on leap year day and celebrated her birthday in the summer. If you were born on February 29th, Leap Year Day, when would you celebrate your birthday?
